How to Switch Between Speakers and Headphones

Switching between speakers and headphones is one of the most common audio tasks, and Windows offers a few different ways to do it depending on how your headphones connect — via a 3.5mm jack, USB, or Bluetooth.

Switch when headphones plug into a jack

Most desktop and laptop 3.5mm jacks trigger a small popup asking what you just plugged in; if it doesn't appear, switch manually:

  1. Click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
  2. Select the headphone device from the flyout's device list, or open Settings > System > Sound and change 'Output'.
  3. Windows should also auto-detect the jack and switch automatically in most cases.

Switch with USB or Bluetooth headphones

  1. Make sure the headphones are connected and paired under Settings > Bluetooth & devices (for Bluetooth) or simply plugged in (for USB).
  2. Click the speaker icon in the taskbar and pick the headset from the device list.
  3. For Bluetooth headsets with a microphone, Windows may list a separate 'Hands-Free' profile with lower audio quality but mic support — pick the stereo profile for music, hands-free for calls.

Switch back to speakers

  1. Click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
  2. Select your speakers from the device list.
  3. Unplugging wired headphones from a jack usually switches back to speakers automatically.
